Meanings of a folded U.S. flag

The first fold of the American flag is a symbol of life.
The second fold is a symbol of our belief in eternal life.
The third fold is made in honor and remembrance of the veteran departing our ranks, and who gave a portion of his or her life for the defense of our country to attain peace throughout the world.
The fourth fold is a symbol of our weaker nature, as American citizens trusting in God, it is to Him we turn in times of peace, as well as in times of war, for His divine guidance.
The fifth fold is a tribute to our country, the United States of America. For in the words for Stephen Decatur, "Our country, in dealing with other countries, may she always be right, but it is still our country, right or wrong."
The sixth fold is for where our hearts lie. It is with our heart that we pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.
The seventh fold is a tribute to our armed forces, for it is through the armed forces that we protect our country and our flag against all enemies, whether they be found within or without the boundaries of our republic.
The eighth fold is a tribute to the one who entered into the valley of the shadow of death, that we might see the light of day, and to honor our mother, for whom it flies on Mother's Day.
The ninth fold is a tribute to womanhood, for it has been through their faith, love, loyalty and devotion that the character of the men and women who have made this country great have been molded.
The 10th fold is a tribute to father, for he, too, has given his sons and daughters for the defense of our country since he or she was first born.
The 11th fold, in the eyes of Hebrew citizens, represents the lower portion of the seal of King David and King Solomon and glorifies, in their eyes, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.
The 12th fold, in the eyes of a Christian citizen, represents an emblem of eternity and glorifies, in their eyes, God the Father, the Son and Holy Ghost.

When the flag is completely folded, the stars are uppermost, reminding us of our national motto, "In God We Trust."

After the flag is completely folded and tucked in, it has the appearance of a cocked hat, ever reminding us of the soldiers who served under General George Washington and the sailors and Marines who served under Captain John Paul Jones and were followed by their comrades and shipmates in the U.S. Armed Forces, preserving for us the rights, privileges and freedoms we enjoy today.

FAQs

When are flags flown on the USS Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor National Memorial?

Flags are flown ceremonially three times a year: December 7 (anniversary of attack on Pearl Harbor), Memorial Day and Independence Day. You can also have your flag flown on a specific date as long as you place your order 7 days in advance. The only days we don't fly flags are Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and New Year's Day as Pearl Harbor National Memorial is closed.

Can I personalize my Pearl Harbor Certificate of Flag Presentation?

Yes. When placing your order, please input the name or names you'd like on your certificate. We recommend one line with 45 letters max. We also recommend writing "John Smith" instead of "JOHN SMITH".

Polymax or Nylon?

The polymax flag is a thicker, heavier material that is similar to cotton. Most people cannot tell the difference. The nylon flag is thin and soft to the touch and does much better for flags being flown outside. Nylon flags are also generally easier to fold.

Just what we wanter

We needed a replacement for my dad's worn-out flag and after a wonderful trip to Hawaii I decided that the best way to commemorate it was to get this flag. My dad and my father in law both were in the service in WWII. We will be using it in our Northwoods home in Wisconsin.

Meant So Much To Our Family

My grandfather served at Pearl Harbor, and my husband and I were able to visit during our honeymoon. Because of this, it holds a special place in our hearts. We just bought a new home that has a flagpole and the first thing we did was purchase this flag. It was a nice to surprise to see that you could include your own wording on the certificate and we were able to honor my grandfather. The flag and certificate arrived so quickly and in great condition. It's a wonderful feeling to see every time we pull in our driveway and this particular flag gives even more meaning.

Awesome gift!

I bought this flag for my brother who is a true patriot for Christmas. He was honored, so thankful and has it in a flag case on his memorial wall. Thanks for the incredible gift!

Wrong Certificate

I reviewed twice and confirmed three times the wording on the certificate. Upon receipt, the certificate was incorrect. Very disappointed

Wanted one for years.

When my son asked me what I wanted for Christmas, I told him for years I've had my eye on a flag flown over the USS Arizona memorial. I thought there wouldn't be any left from the December 7th 82nd anniversary so I was going to have one flown for my birthday next year but a visit to the site showed that I was wrong and that there still a few left! Item arrived just before Christmas and I'll be getting a display case to show it properly. What a great memento!

Heartfelt Gratitude for a Meaningful Purchase

I recently purchased a United States flag that was flown on the USS Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor National Memorial on December 7th, the anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor. I acquired this special flag as a gift for my cousin, Sgt. Bob Poulin, who served with the US Marines, 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines, in Vietnam '67-'68.

I am writing to express my sincere gratitude for the prompt delivery of the flag. The significance of this token, which carries the weight of history and honors the brave individuals who have served our country, is not lost on me.

It is my intention to present this cherished flag to Sgt. Poulin in person when we vacation together on Kauai in July. The ability to offer such a meaningful and poignant gift is truly invaluable, and your service has made this possible.

Thank you for the exceptional service and the opportunity to bring a piece of history into the hands of a deserving veteran. Your commitment to honoring our heroes is commendable.

With gratitude,

Bob LaMontagne

Flags purchased thru Pacific Historic Parks

I purchased my first flag when we visited the Arizona in 1999. When we need to retire a flag I always replace and dedicate a flag to someone special or to every man and woman who stands, or has died , for our flag. God bless everyone for what I have. Carol Davis

I placed my order two weeks ago and still have not received it. When I click the tracking number provided, it says a shipping label was created but USPS still has not received the package to ship. I have emailed and left a voicemail and gotten no responses. Please contact me so we can figure this out.

Father's Day

Father’s Day 2007 came and went,
And no call’s and no cards from either of my boys.

However, I wasn’t upset since both were in a combat zone. They had other priorities, and a note to the “Old Man” wasn’t at the top of their list. Not when life and death choices are being made.
On Monday, I got an E-Card from the younger son with an apology for being late. On Tuesday, my older son e-mailed me to tell me there was a shipping problem with the gift he had sent me and to be patient, since it was coming from the other side of the world.
A few weeks later, a box came in the mail with the return address and the customs form from Iraq stated: “Flag.” When I saw that, I thought he had sent me an Iraqi flag which would be unique, but upon opening the box, I found a United States flag perfectly folded into a triangle with only the blue and stars showing, as protocol dictates. At that point, my thoughts were it was nice to have a “Spare” stars and stripes to use at some point when mine was beyond serviceable.
Then I read the attached card. “This flag was flown at ‘Camp Ramadi’ on June 17th 2007. I thought you might enjoy it.” I realized it would never be a “spare” flag because I would never unfurl it again. I put it in a display case and proudly hung up in my hobby room, straight across from the door for all to see.
Through the years, I was always on the lookout for a special gift for him, but nothing ever seemed right until one day I found a website for the renowned ship “USS Arizona.” It’s a battleship that sank during the Japanese attack on the naval base at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. We lost over 1,170 crewmen in the attack on that ship. On one page, you can order a flag flown over the memorial for some of the most popular holidays like “Memorial Day,” “Veterans Day,” “Thanksgiving,” “Pearl Harbor Day,” or whatever holiday or special day for the recipient that you prefer.
I picked out the size of flag that would suit the situation and the short dedication I wanted on the Certificate of Authentication. I chose his birthday of this year as the date. And like he did to me, I e-mailed him to say there was a “shipping problem” with his birthday gift and to be patient. It was on the way!
It took longer than I expected for him to receive it, but when he did, he called me right away. I knew who it was from the caller id on my phone, but no one on the other end of the line was talking. It took me a moment to realize he was there, but couldn’t speak from the emotions he was feeling. When I heard the ragged breathing and use of Kleenexes on his eyes, it affected me the same way.
For a couple of minutes, it was just two wary warriors, quietly connected over the phone and enjoying the other’s company.
