Meanings of a folded U.S. flag

The first fold of the American flag is a symbol of life.
The second fold is a symbol of our belief in eternal life.
The third fold is made in honor and remembrance of the veteran departing our ranks, and who gave a portion of his or her life for the defense of our country to attain peace throughout the world.
The fourth fold is a symbol of our weaker nature, as American citizens trusting in God, it is to Him we turn in times of peace, as well as in times of war, for His divine guidance.
The fifth fold is a tribute to our country, the United States of America. For in the words for Stephen Decatur, "Our country, in dealing with other countries, may she always be right, but it is still our country, right or wrong."
The sixth fold is for where our hearts lie. It is with our heart that we pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.
The seventh fold is a tribute to our armed forces, for it is through the armed forces that we protect our country and our flag against all enemies, whether they be found within or without the boundaries of our republic.
The eighth fold is a tribute to the one who entered into the valley of the shadow of death, that we might see the light of day, and to honor our mother, for whom it flies on Mother's Day.
The ninth fold is a tribute to womanhood, for it has been through their faith, love, loyalty and devotion that the character of the men and women who have made this country great have been molded.
The 10th fold is a tribute to father, for he, too, has given his sons and daughters for the defense of our country since he or she was first born.
The 11th fold, in the eyes of Hebrew citizens, represents the lower portion of the seal of King David and King Solomon and glorifies, in their eyes, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.
The 12th fold, in the eyes of a Christian citizen, represents an emblem of eternity and glorifies, in their eyes, God the Father, the Son and Holy Ghost.

When the flag is completely folded, the stars are uppermost, reminding us of our national motto, "In God We Trust."

After the flag is completely folded and tucked in, it has the appearance of a cocked hat, ever reminding us of the soldiers who served under General George Washington and the sailors and Marines who served under Captain John Paul Jones and were followed by their comrades and shipmates in the U.S. Armed Forces, preserving for us the rights, privileges and freedoms we enjoy today.

    FAQs

When are flags flown at Pearl Harbor National Memorial?

Flags are flown ceremonially three times a year: December 7 (anniversary of attack on Pearl Harbor), Memorial Day and Independence Day. You can also have your flag flown on a specific date as long as you place your order 7 days in advance. The only days we don't fly flags are Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and New Year's Day as Pearl Harbor National Memorial is closed.

Can I personalize my Pearl Harbor Certificate of Flag Presentation?

Yes. When placing your order, please input the name or names you'd like on your certificate. We recommend one line with 45 letters max. We also recommend writing "John Smith" instead of "JOHN SMITH".

    Polymax or Nylon?

The polymax flag is a thicker, heavier material that is similar to cotton. Most people cannot tell the difference. The nylon flag is thin and soft to the touch and does much better for flags being flown outside. Nylon flags are also generally easier to fold.

This was our second trip to Pearl Harbor and the Arizona Memorial, the first being in 2002 for our 20th wedding anniversary, this year celebrating our 40th anniversary a little late. We had originally planned to visit 2 years earlier but were delayed due to COVID. When making our reservation my daughter found the option to have a flag fly on the day of our visit , unfortunately the first trip was canceled due to COVID but I have the flag. This trip I had hoped to be there while the flag was flying but it had already been taken down by the time we arrived on the memorial (late morning). If you want to be there while your flag is displayed try and coordinate the time with the PHP organization. They were very helpful when we asked about our flag.

We dedicated the flag to all of our family members that have served: father, step-father, brother, father-in-law, uncles and aunt. Having grown up in the military I have a strong sense of patriotism. The flag will be displayed in a place of honor along with my fathers flag!

The flag means a great deal to me. I was born on Dec. 7th. I was 5 years old when the bombing of Pearl Harbor took place. I only remember that I could not understand why everyone was more interested in what was on the radio than my birthday. My father had spent 3 years in the islands as a missionary before my birth. I grew up thinking this was the most wonderful place on earth. I had an uncle that gave his life as a diver bringing up ships after the attack. I have always been taught patriotism growing up, I remember gathering on the 4th of July for a Flag Ceremony to honor the birth of our nation. I had 5 uncles serve in World War II and I served for 8 years in the Utah ANG. I am now 86 years old and It is my desire to has the flag you have provided to drape my coffin when I leave this life. I can think of no greater honor. I love the Islands and have visited over 15 times. I always get chocked up as I visit Pearl Harbor. Thank you for providing this service.

Flag is was an integral part of our July 4th dedication ceremony. It is a prized possession of the FLVG and remains flying since July 4th.
    Picture attached as FYI.

Again, many thanks for expediting the flag in time for our wonderful ceremony.

    Sincerely yours,

    Bill Shugarts, FLVG Director
