Meanings of a folded U.S. flag

The first fold of the American flag is a symbol of life.
The second fold is a symbol of our belief in eternal life.
The third fold is made in honor and remembrance of the veteran departing our ranks, and who gave a portion of his or her life for the defense of our country to attain peace throughout the world.
The fourth fold is a symbol of our weaker nature, as American citizens trusting in God, it is to Him we turn in times of peace, as well as in times of war, for His divine guidance.
The fifth fold is a tribute to our country, the United States of America. For in the words for Stephen Decatur, "Our country, in dealing with other countries, may she always be right, but it is still our country, right or wrong."
The sixth fold is for where our hearts lie. It is with our heart that we pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.
The seventh fold is a tribute to our armed forces, for it is through the armed forces that we protect our country and our flag against all enemies, whether they be found within or without the boundaries of our republic.
The eighth fold is a tribute to the one who entered into the valley of the shadow of death, that we might see the light of day, and to honor our mother, for whom it flies on Mother's Day.
The ninth fold is a tribute to womanhood, for it has been through their faith, love, loyalty and devotion that the character of the men and women who have made this country great have been molded.
The 10th fold is a tribute to father, for he, too, has given his sons and daughters for the defense of our country since he or she was first born.
The 11th fold, in the eyes of Hebrew citizens, represents the lower portion of the seal of King David and King Solomon and glorifies, in their eyes, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.
The 12th fold, in the eyes of a Christian citizen, represents an emblem of eternity and glorifies, in their eyes, God the Father, the Son and Holy Ghost.

When the flag is completely folded, the stars are uppermost, reminding us of our national motto, "In God We Trust."

After the flag is completely folded and tucked in, it has the appearance of a cocked hat, ever reminding us of the soldiers who served under General George Washington and the sailors and Marines who served under Captain John Paul Jones and were followed by their comrades and shipmates in the U.S. Armed Forces, preserving for us the rights, privileges and freedoms we enjoy today.

When are flags flown at Pearl Harbor National Memorial?

Flags are flown ceremonially three times a year: December 7 (anniversary of attack on Pearl Harbor), Memorial Day and Independence Day. You can also have your flag flown on a specific date as long as you place your order 7 days in advance. The only days we don't fly flags are Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and New Year's Day as Pearl Harbor National Memorial is closed.

Can I personalize my Pearl Harbor Certificate of Flag Presentation?

Yes. When placing your order, please input the name or names you'd like on your certificate. We recommend one line with 45 letters max. We also recommend writing "John Smith" instead of "JOHN SMITH".

    Polymax or Nylon?

The polymax flag is a thicker, heavier material that is similar to cotton. Most people cannot tell the difference. The nylon flag is thin and soft to the touch and does much better for flags being flown outside. Nylon flags are also generally easier to fold.

    Makes a great gift

I bought it for my Grandson as a Christmas gift and because it is the 80th Anniversary Flag. He's only four so I hope he gets on for the 100th Anniversary and this event should never be forgotten. I served in the Navy and so did my Grandsons' father who did volunteer work at the old visitor center while he was stationed there waiting for his assignment on an attack submarine.

To the Backroom Guys and Gals

I had the flag flown over the Arizona on 2 September (the official VJ day) in memory of all the men and women who worked tirelessly to analyze, break and exploit the cypher machines of both Japan and Germany. Granted, they were not being shot at, but work on these machines was frustratingly difficult and at that time thankless-any breakthrough could not be revealed. Even when the machines were solved it was no easy task to find the proper settings and actually decode the enciphered data.

    Family Treasure

My Great Uncle was Band master PO 1st Class Frederick Kinney. The entire experience was emotionally moving bringing up sadness and gratitude. My mother told us stories about the day, and how the whole family in eastern Kentucky huddled around the radio for news. It was afirm memory for her, since her uncle was killed on her birthday. When my wife found we could purchase a flag and have it flown over the memorial, we jumped at the opportunity. We are building a shadow box for the flag, the certificate, photo of Kinney, and miniatures of the medals PO 1st Class Kinney was awarded. If I could rate this with ten stars,bi would

    Awesome gift!

We purchased the flag for a friend who served in the US Navy, and regrettably lost 2 brothers to accidents during their own naval service. We had the flag flown on our friend's birthday, but in honor of his whole family. He was very touched by the gift. It was something special we could only have done through the PHP.

    Flag over Arizona Memorial

Proud to display our Stars & Stripes flown on Arizona Memorial, in the shadow box I'm putting together for my son, a Marine 1st LT, who recently decided to become a civilian again. Mahalo PHP for making this possible.

Thank you so much for flying the flag in honor of my dad. He served with pride in Korea. I was in Hawaii the day the flag was flown. I was able to bring the flag home with me and present it to him. We are currently awaiting the arrival of the certificate. Both will be proudly displayed in the home.

Everything was perfect. My husband is a Veteran and enjoyed this gift very much. Thank you.

Enjoyed the book I always like reading real history.
One of the cups was completely destroyed, sent you an email when received got no reply, not happy on this
Got no geek patch or black tears.
What I did get intact (book & 1 cup) proved to be quite expensive…………

Loved it so much we bought it twice

My parents brought this shirt back as a souvenir for my 4 year old daughter. She wore it constantly until the day she discovered scissors 😭. She cut it up and was so proud of herself until I freaked out, then we both cried… I would usually take this opportunity to teach a lesson about scissors and say “sorry, you’re SOL.” But this gift was so loved and I felt she learned her lesson when she realized she had ruined it rather than improving it.

    Great quality sticker

I bought it to put with my photo book and keepsakes from my trip to visit this incredible memorial.

    Great coin

Just a beautiful tribute to those who served at Pearl Harbor on that fateful December 7th.
