Meanings of a folded U.S. flag

The first fold of the American flag is a symbol of life.
The second fold is a symbol of our belief in eternal life.
The third fold is made in honor and remembrance of the veteran departing our ranks, and who gave a portion of his or her life for the defense of our country to attain peace throughout the world.
The fourth fold is a symbol of our weaker nature, as American citizens trusting in God, it is to Him we turn in times of peace, as well as in times of war, for His divine guidance.
The fifth fold is a tribute to our country, the United States of America. For in the words for Stephen Decatur, "Our country, in dealing with other countries, may she always be right, but it is still our country, right or wrong."
The sixth fold is for where our hearts lie. It is with our heart that we pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.
The seventh fold is a tribute to our armed forces, for it is through the armed forces that we protect our country and our flag against all enemies, whether they be found within or without the boundaries of our republic.
The eighth fold is a tribute to the one who entered into the valley of the shadow of death, that we might see the light of day, and to honor our mother, for whom it flies on Mother's Day.
The ninth fold is a tribute to womanhood, for it has been through their faith, love, loyalty and devotion that the character of the men and women who have made this country great have been molded.
The 10th fold is a tribute to father, for he, too, has given his sons and daughters for the defense of our country since he or she was first born.
The 11th fold, in the eyes of Hebrew citizens, represents the lower portion of the seal of King David and King Solomon and glorifies, in their eyes, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.
The 12th fold, in the eyes of a Christian citizen, represents an emblem of eternity and glorifies, in their eyes, God the Father, the Son and Holy Ghost.

When the flag is completely folded, the stars are uppermost, reminding us of our national motto, "In God We Trust."

After the flag is completely folded and tucked in, it has the appearance of a cocked hat, ever reminding us of the soldiers who served under General George Washington and the sailors and Marines who served under Captain John Paul Jones and were followed by their comrades and shipmates in the U.S. Armed Forces, preserving for us the rights, privileges and freedoms we enjoy today.

FAQs
When are flags flown on the USS Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor National Memorial?

Flags are flown ceremonially three times a year: December 7 (anniversary of attack on Pearl Harbor), Memorial Day and Independence Day. You can also have your flag flown on a specific date as long as you place your order 7 days in advance. The only days we don't fly flags are Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and New Year's Day as Pearl Harbor National Memorial is closed.

Can I personalize my Pearl Harbor Certificate of Flag Presentation?

Yes. When placing your order, please input the name or names you'd like on your certificate. We recommend one line with 45 letters max. We also recommend writing "John Smith" instead of "JOHN SMITH".

Polymax or Nylon?

The polymax flag is a thicker, heavier material that is similar to cotton. Most people cannot tell the difference. The nylon flag is thin and soft to the touch and does much better for flags being flown outside. Nylon flags are also generally easier to fold.

Thank you for a beautiful relic.

I am delighted to have a relic from the USS Arizona as this flag flew over the Memorial on Dec. 7, 2021, 80 years after the attack. It is a reminder to me of God giving this country many graces and blessings such as the men and women in the armed forces who gave everything for us to be able to exercise our precious freedoms. Thank you! Fr. Sean Raftis

Thank You

This flag is in Honor of my Cousin, Garland Wade Van Atta MM1c, who is currently still serving aboard the USS Arizona. This flag has helped bring him home for us in our way. It was such an Honor to be there this year to Celebrate and Honor him and all of the men we lost that day 80 years ago. Its a day I wont forget! God Bless

50th Anniversary of Morning Colors

December 7, 1971 I was assigned to the Pearl Harbor Signal Tower. I was assigned to blouse the US Flag above the Signal Tower that morning. At 8:00 am sharp I pulled the cord and all the ships and boats in Pearl Harbor raised their morning colors. At about 8:02 SM2 C. Riddle received a flashing light message from a Japanese Flotilla seeking permission to enter port. It was the first time the Japanese Navy returned to Pearl Harbor since December 7, 1941. Permission was granted and I was the recording the message. This flag arrived as promised in excellent condition and is now a family treasure for SMSN R. D. Newton. Thank you and Merry Christmas!

In memory of AA Woodward

My Father (AA Woodward) died aboard the USS Arizona on Dec. 7,1941. Over the years I have visited the memorial several times and have often purchased flags for myself, my children and grandchildren. Did so this year for the 80th. Very pleased with certificates and the quick delivery. Thank you, Karen Richardson

Limited choice

The quality of the flag received and service were very good. However, the reason for no five star review was the limited choice of flag sizes in nylon material. No 3' x 5' nylon flags were available when I ordered--obviously the most popular in size and material. I knew from past experience the polyester flags do not fly well unless there is substantial wind. Reluctantly, I had to order the only logical size choice left which was the 2 x 3' nylon size. I could not wait for the restock of the 3' x 5' flags because I wanted to get a flag that was flown on 7Dec21, the 80th anniversary of the Pearl Harbor attack. The flag I purchased will be honorably and respectfully flown on every 7Dec from a 20' flagpole. It will look rather undersized, however I at least have an 80th anniversary flag. I would hope that in the future the PHP store can use its sales history and supply chain experience to anticipate increased sales on special dates and plan accordingly. I also should have done the same.

Purchased a December 7th flag

Purchased 3 December 7th flags while on base, needed one more when I returned to Florida. I placed an order online, and when it arrived (very quickly) it was exactly what I wanted down to the name on the letter.
Thank you everyone

Great shirt and fast shipping!

Perfect

Everything was perfect. My husband is a Veteran and enjoyed this gift very much. Thank you.

Enjoyed the book I always like reading real history.
One of the cups was completely destroyed, sent you an email when received got no reply, not happy on this
Got no geek patch or black tears.
What I did get intact (book & 1 cup) proved to be quite expensive…………

Loved it so much we bought it twice

My parents brought this shirt back as a souvenir for my 4 year old daughter. She wore it constantly until the day she discovered scissors 😭. She cut it up and was so proud of herself until I freaked out, then we both cried… I would usually take this opportunity to teach a lesson about scissors and say “sorry, you’re SOL.” But this gift was so loved and I felt she learned her lesson when she realized she had ruined it rather than improving it.

Great quality sticker

I bought it to put with my photo book and keepsakes from my trip to visit this incredible memorial.
