In November 1888, Saint Marianne arrived at Kalaupapa to establish and manage Bishop Home for girls at the settlement. After Saint Damien de Veuster's death in 1889, Saint Marianne was chosen to care for patients at the boy's home at Kalawao. A new home for the boys was later established, under Saint Marianne's leadership, at Kalaupapa. After nursing those suffering from Hansen's disease for 35 years, Saint Marianne died in 1918 at the age of 80. She was canonized on October 21, 2012.
