In 1873 at age 33, Saint Damien traveled by boat to Kalawao, Moloka'i, a Hansen's disease settlement. He worked tirelessly to improve the quality of life for patients at Kalawao. In addition to caring for the sick, he built houses, constructed a water system, planted trees, and expanded Saint Philomena Catholic Church. He organized schools, bands, and choirs, and secured funding for the care of the patients. Twelve years after arriving in Kalawao, Saint Damien was diagnosed with Hansen's disease. He died in 1889 at the age of 49. Saint Damien was canonized on October 9, 2009.
