Ili Na Ho'omana'o o Kalaupapa: Casting Remembrances of Kalaupapa - A continuous history of Kalaupapa; from the first people relocated to the peninsula in 1866 because of isolation policies related to leprosy, to modern day residents, to family members who will carry their relatives' legacy into the future. Photographs taken by Wayne Levin from the 1980s through the present are combined with text by Anwei Skinsnes Law and Valerie Monson that includes interviews with Kalaupapa residents and descendants of individuals sent to Kalaupapa as early as 1879.

During the early 80s, my brother and I spent one week “volunteering” (doing maintenance work at the Protestant church) in Kalaupapa. We had no idea at that time that this would prove to be one of life’s most meaningful experiences, providing us with so much more than we could possibly return. I happened upon this beautiful book by searching for the obituary of a resident who became a friend, and discovered he was featured here. In addition to being an accurate portrayal of a controversial history, this book contains personal accounts of the lives of many residents (some of whom we were privileged to meet and spend time) shared through thoughtful interviews and stunning photographs. Words cannot adequately express my humble gratitude for this important work. Mahalo to the authors for shining a brilliant beam of light on the resilient and incredibly generous people of Kalaupapa.

I visited Oahu in April 2025 and spent a lot of time at Pearl Harbor. I picked up a bunch of items including t-shirts at the gift shop but didn't see this one. I recently visited the online site and saw it and knew I had to have it. Made of the same durable quality as the other shirts I purchased and very cool looking. A great addition to my collection.
I ordered a flag to be flown at the USS Arizona for my son 50th birthday when i became the senior on 04-25-1976 and to remember the sailors who perish when the ship went down in the harbor god bless all that perish on that day.
A high-quality shirt that fits well. It features an embroideeed name and logo and the fabric looks like it will hold its shape and color for a long time.
I read Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes to my fifth graders every year. I can never finish without tears. These little cranes are a reminder that children are the true victims of war. And children are our hope to end these wars.
