Book includes interviews with exiled leprosy patients at Kalaupapa, Hawaii.
"This book is about the stigma of leprosy in Hawaii and how sick Hawaiian people were treated. But today it might also be about the stigma of AIDS, or SARS or the Bird Flu. Anywhere. It is a book about fear. Fear of pandemic, and fear of sick people. Fear of the unknown. Same stigma, different diseases. Diseases with no quick cures or fixes. In the future, Public Health policy could very well be the same with other diseases as they were with leprosy in Hawaii. Mandatory isolation. This book is about fear and the disgrace, shame, and imprisonment of sick people, and what those sick people experienced. It is painful to read some of their descriptions. Let us hope that in the future, compassion, understanding and assistance to those affected by disease will prevail. Let us not lose our humanity in the face of fear." — Ted Gugelyk
This is our second purchase, it was raised over the USS Arizona in honor of a family member that served in WWII. It will fly over the farmstead where he raised his family.
The quality and fit are great but not the windbreaker I ordered
We bought a windbreaker back in 2016 when we were in Hawaii for our 50th wedding anniversary celebration. My husband has worn it so much that it is getting worn out. So I ordered him another one. The feature he liked the best was that the hood is hidden in a pocket at the neckline. Well, we received a windbreaker without that feature! He's very disappointed. After 3 emails to you, we have not heard back how to correct the order.
I send this book to friends who are planning visit to HI. This is a very interesting story of the Infamous day told from the perspective of a young girl whose dad was a Marine stationed on Ford Island. Their house faces the AZ and today bears a sign of her last name.
This women’s shirt runs very small. XL fits more like a small-medium. It is MUCH too small for me. I will donate it to a needy family. Too much trouble to return, as I threw away the slips/tags.
Proud to be a supporter of the PHP cause. Especially when I get the privilege to wear a shirt honoring our boys who have been lost but not forgotten. Please continue to add new and distinctive shirts and I will keep on buying!
