Fourteen-year-old Tai Shimoda's family has lost everything. Like many other Japanese-Americans at the start of World War II, Tai's family has been forced to leave their home and move to Tule Lake Relocation Center - a desolate camp surrounded by barbed wire in northern California.
Though he misses his home in Sacramento, Tai keeps busy at Tule Lake hanging out with friends and training for the judo tournament. But as tensions in camp rise, Tai's brother, Ben, joins a group that has refused to swear allegiance to the United States. They call themselves the No-Nos. Tai's father calls them Disloyals. Soon Tai must decide what he believes. Will he join his beloved brother and the No-Nos or, like his father, remain true to America?
The Oahu Island Atlas and Maps was published in 2010. It's out of print from the original publisher. I'm thankful to Pacific Historic Parks for still having some copies in their inventory. I'm giving my brother and sister a map when they come to visit from the mainland.
We only purchase flags flown over the USS Arizona. We are veterans and a Gold Star Family, having lost family at Pearl Harbor and in Vietnam. Our flags are a constant reminder of the freedoms we fought for and the loved ones we lost.
This book is wonderful! Full of so much information. Amazing stories! I can't imagine having lived through this. Every time we visit Oahu we make sure to visit Pearl Harbor. In October 2024 the park ranger told the story of the bugler and the fighter pilot before we went out to get on the boat to the memorial. Always save room in your heart for grace! Thank you for making these books available when we get back home and wish we were still in Hawaii!
