Ka'ahupahau: The Legendary Shark Goddess of Pearl Harbor: The ancient Hawaiians mastered the practiced of aquaculture through the development of fish ponds that were built throughout the major islands of Hawaii. Some of the largest of these fish ponds were found at Pearl Harbor and they provide a major source of fish for Oahu.
The Shark Goddess of Pearl Harbor was the home of the legendary Hawaiian shark goddess named Ka’ahupahau, who lived at the entrance of the harbor and was known for aiding fishermen, protecting the life of the seas, and drove off man-eating sharks. During the early 80s, my brother and I spent one week “volunteering” (doing maintenance work at the Protestant church) in Kalaupapa. We had no idea at that time that this would prove to be one of life’s most meaningful experiences, providing us with so much more than we could possibly return. I happened upon this beautiful book by searching for the obituary of a resident who became a friend, and discovered he was featured here. In addition to being an accurate portrayal of a controversial history, this book contains personal accounts of the lives of many residents (some of whom we were privileged to meet and spend time) shared through thoughtful interviews and stunning photographs. Words cannot adequately express my humble gratitude for this important work. Mahalo to the authors for shining a brilliant beam of light on the resilient and incredibly generous people of Kalaupapa.
We saw the puzzle in the store at Pearl Harbor, but didn't want to have to keep up with it or try to fit it in our suitcases, so we ordered it online. It beat us home! Can't wait to put it together.
This is our second purchase, it was raised over the USS Arizona in honor of a family member that served in WWII. It will fly over the farmstead where he raised his family.
