Looking Like The Enemy: My Story of Imprisonment in Japanese-American Internment Camps
When Mary Matsuda was 16 years old, her life changed forever. Mary's happy carefree life growing up on a berry farm in Washington State ended the day the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor. Along with her brother Yoneichi, and her parents, Mary was forced to leave her Vashon Island home and face imprisonment in Japanese-American internment camps during World War II. Why? Because Mary was Japanese American and she looked like the enemy.
Just when Mary was preparing to spring into adulthood, her life tumbled into uncertainty and an unknownfuture. She wondered if she would ever see her home again, or worse, die. For four years, the Matsuda family faced hardships, anxiety and discrimination, but in the end they persevered. Mary's story is honest, heartbreaking, and hopeful. Her life will inspire young readers to find strength as they face their own difficult times.
I first purchased this item when I went to Pearl Harbor in 2025 and it became my favorite mug. I used it almost daily for my morning coffee. Then it got broken so i had to order a new one. Hope it stays around longer.
I actually bought this map at the Gift shop in the Pearl Harbour museum. We carried it separately as we went through Airport security on our way back home. I think it got caught as it went thru the security belt but anyway, we realized on the plane that we didn't have it. When we landed in Las Vegas - the 1st leg of our trip back, I ordered it on my mobile from the Airport and we received it in mint condition via mail a few days later. I would buy 3D maps of Maui (we were there 12 years ago) and any other island I can find, in a heartbeat - the map is that good!
This flag was a gift for my husband for Fathers Day from our family. We had it flown on his birthday. He is US Navy, Ret and was very moved by this gift!
We now hope to plan a trip to the Pearl Harbor Memorial Site!
A fantastic interpretation and retelling of the men who left home and family to fight for freedoms still denied them, and who proved their loyalty to a country they loved through valor and sacrifice few other units have equaled.
Mar was so helpful and found the shirt so quickly and sent it out so fast. I really appreciate their help. You have made my husband very happy. Thank you.
