Night of Infamy One Man's Pearl Harbor SC

by John W. Thomas

On the night of December 7, 1941, after several hours of fruitless searching for the Japanese task force that had bombed Pearl Harbor that morning, six Grumman Wildcat fighters were denied landing back aboard the USS Enterprise due to fear of the ship being spotted if it lit up its flight deck. Ordered to go into Pearl Harbor instead, the planes were mistaken for the enemy when they arrived and were subjected to a hail of "friendly" fire from trigger-happy gunners manning ship and shore artillery in the harbor. Three of the pilots were killed and only one, Ensign Jim Daniels, managed to land his plane unscathed. This is his story.
