Bayonets in Paradise: Martial Law in Hawaii during World War II

By Harry N. Scheiber and Jane L. Scheiber
Bayonets in Paradise recounts the extraordinary story of how the army imposed rigid and absolute control on the total population of Hawaii during World War II. Declared immediately after the Pearl Harbor attack, martial law was all-inclusive, bringing under army rule every aspect of the Territory of Hawaii's laws and governmental institutions. Even the judiciary was placed under direct subservience to the military authorities. The result was a protracted crisis in civil liberties, as the army subjected more than 400,000 civilians — citizens and alien residents alike — to sweeping, intrusive social and economic regulations and to enforcement of army orders in provost courts with no semblance of due process. In addition, the army enforced special regulations against Hawaii's large population of Japanese ancestry; thousands of Japanese Americans were investigated, hundreds were arrested, and some 2,000 were incarcerated. In marked contrast to the well-known policy of the mass removals on the West Coast, however, Hawaii's policy was one of "selected," albeit preventive, detention.
Army rule in Hawaii lasted until late 1944 — making it the longest period in which an American civilian population has ever been governed under martial law. The army brass invoked the imperatives of security and "military necessity" to perpetuate its regime of censorship, curfews, forced work assignments, and arbitrary "justice" in the military courts. Broadly accepted at first, these policies led in time to dramatic clashes over the wisdom and constitutionality of martial law, involving the president, his top cabinet officials, and the military.
The authors also provide a rich analysis of the legal challenges to martial law that culminated in Duncan v. Kahanamoku, a remarkable case in which the U.S. Supreme Court finally heard argument on the martial law regime — and ruled in 1946 that provost court justice and the military's usurpation of the civilian government had been illegal.
Based largely on archival sources, this comprehensive, authoritative study places the long-neglected and largely unknown history of martial law in Hawaii in the larger context of America's ongoing struggle between the defense of constitutional liberties and the exercise of emergency powers.

The shirt is great. My only complaint is it doesn't come in another color. I'm not a big fan of dark blue. It is a great way to honor our country and not forget the past.
got this Medallion in a set of items including the Diamond Head Certificate, Diamond Head Medallion and the Diamond Head Bench Marking pin. We did both during our last visit and loved the experience.
I’m playing catch up with just now getting the walking stick medallions of the places I’ve been in the last 3 years. I purchased this set with the Arizona and Diamond Head medallion along with the Diamond Head Cert and the Bench Mark pin for a good price and I’m really happy with all items.
a nice piece to add to our travels collection my wife and I simply put both of our names onto the cert with the date we climbed in the circle. Printed very nicely and I purchase a nice certificate frame for it.
I ordered this flag, your people canceled it because they did not have the one I ordered. Then 25 email and 25 phone calls later. These flags where to be flown on the
25th of Jan with a pick up order. After 25 or so phones calls i final got a young lady (Mgr of gift shop) who fixed all of this and went above and beyond. They where flown on date in question and handed to me and certificate where done while waiting. But the stress was so bad. As we where there for our 50th Anniversary and my daughter 43rd birthday and i had needed this done. I ordered early to assure this was being done.
1. If you don't have flags remove from website.
2. If you have a phone number on website, have someone answering it.
3 if you have an email on website make sure someone reply to each email.
Not that hard.
I thought that it was very nice and love adding it to my collection of his? I have a nice complete set of DVD"s along with some nice Colorized Kennedy Half Dollars and he was one of my favorites while I grew up as well.
