USS Arizona survivor Raymond Haerry, Sr., was one of the lucky ones.
Haerry and 334 of the battleship's 1,511 man crew made up of sailors and marines were the only Arizona crewmen to survive the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941.
Raymond Haerry never wanted to return to Pearl Harbor after World War II ended. The memories were just too painful.
It was not until just before his death that Haerry decided it was time to go home to the battleship to spend eternity with his shipmates. It was his dying wish to once again be with the men he considered his brothers.
Journey Home to the USS Arizona follows the family of Ray Haerry on an incredible and very emotional 5,200 mile trip as they return to Pearl Harbor to place their father's urn aboard the great battleship along with over 1,000 shipmates who lost their lives on December 7, 1941 and remain entombed on the Arizona.
The journey to Hawaii reaffirmed a family's belief that a nation still cares about those who fought and survived World War II, especially those who were there in the opening minutes of America's involvement in history's greatest global conflict.
Produced, written, and directed by Tim Gray. Narrated by Matthew Broderick.
This is a well written account of the attack on Pearl Harbor and this brave sailor's survival and the fate of his shipmates. Should be required reading for all Americans. Definitely illustrates why that generation is labelled the greatest!!
It was an emotional gift for my parents. They loved it and it meant so much to my Dad who is a Navy veteran. The packaging and certificate was fabulous. It made for very unique memory for them.
The Oahu Island Atlas and Maps was published in 2010. It's out of print from the original publisher. I'm thankful to Pacific Historic Parks for still having some copies in their inventory. I'm giving my brother and sister a map when they come to visit from the mainland.
