The true story told by the midget submarine officer who became United States P.O.W. #1
Translated by Toru Matsumoto. Annotated by Gary R. Coover.
The December 7, 1941, surprise attack on Pearl Harbor in Hawaii and the subsequent detention and interment of American citizens of Japanese ancestry are two of the most shocking events of the past century.
This is an eyewitness account of both, by the only known midget submarine skipper who survived the attack and who also became United States Prisoner of War #1.
Originally written in Japanese by Ensign Kazuo Sakamaki shortly after the war and translated into English by Toru Matsumoto, this book has long been unavailable and out of print.
This new edition preserves the original story exactly as told and translated, plus includes photographs and annotations to help you better understand the once top-secret midget submarine and the universal nature of the trials and tribulations of a young Japanese sailor caught up in the whirlwind of World War II.
Soft cover. 150 pages. Approximately 5.25 inches by 8 inches. Made in the USA.
Purchased this book some time ago and it is an intriguing read. Glad that his story is told at Pearl Harbor and in the book. Sakamaki was looked down upon when he returned to Japan because he was captured. His nine fellow submariners are honored at Yasukini in Tokyo with photos, but his space is left vacant. He became an automobile executive and moved to Brazil work on operations there. There's a ex-pat Japanese community in Brazil. Highly recommend this book.

The quality and fit are great but not the windbreaker I ordered
We bought a windbreaker back in 2016 when we were in Hawaii for our 50th wedding anniversary celebration. My husband has worn it so much that it is getting worn out. So I ordered him another one. The feature he liked the best was that the hood is hidden in a pocket at the neckline. Well, we received a windbreaker without that feature! He's very disappointed. After 3 emails to you, we have not heard back how to correct the order.
I send this book to friends who are planning visit to HI. This is a very interesting story of the Infamous day told from the perspective of a young girl whose dad was a Marine stationed on Ford Island. Their house faces the AZ and today bears a sign of her last name.
This women’s shirt runs very small. XL fits more like a small-medium. It is MUCH too small for me. I will donate it to a needy family. Too much trouble to return, as I threw away the slips/tags.
Proud to be a supporter of the PHP cause. Especially when I get the privilege to wear a shirt honoring our boys who have been lost but not forgotten. Please continue to add new and distinctive shirts and I will keep on buying!
