Pearl Harbor Survivors: An Oral History of 24 Servicemen

On December 7, 1941, Japan waged a surprise attack on the United States Naval Base at Pearl Harbor. It was a major victory for the Japanese Navy, which in less than two hours destroyed 188 American planes, damaged another 159, and sunk or seriously damaged 18 U.S. warships. The battleships Arizona and Oklahoma were sunk. The battleships California, West Virginia, and Tennessee were badly damaged and would not rejoin the United States fleet for months. Over 2,400 American military personnel were killed and 1,178 were wounded. The Japanese lost 29 planes and pilots and five midget submarines and one large sub with their crews.

Here are 24 personal accounts of servicemen who survived the attack on Pearl Harbor. These accounts cover in detail the location of each of the men and his experience during and after the attack. Also included is general information about Pearl Harbor.

About the author: Harry Spiller served two tours in Vietnam with the Marine Corps. He is an associate professor of criminal justice and the author of Prisoners of Nazis (1998) and American POWs in Korea: Sixteen Personal Accounts (1998). He lives in Marion, Illinois.

On the Small Side

The color and printing on this shirt are fantastic, as is the fabric. The fit, however, is not. My wife normally wears an XL/XXL, but went up to a XXXL as she wanted to be able to use it as a work out shirt and loves these to be loose and long. This one fits more like a small XXL, and is really short. So much so that she is now going to order a mens in hopes of a better fit.

Home of the Free Because of the Brave

My dad served in the United States Navy during WWII and I love Hawaii so it is only fitting that I share these two loves by getting this flag that was flown over Pearl Harbor for the 80th anniversary commemoration of the attack on Pearl Harbor. I am a huge Elvis fan and know that he held a concert which raised $68,000 in early 1960s to get the ball rolling for this memorial to be built. He too was a great patriot.

Amazing artwork

I purchased the print entitled Tree of Life for a friend who has a great interest I. World war 2 history. When I gave him this beautiful work oh art it brought this tough on the outside man to tears. The price is unbelievable for this quality of work.

I love the hat Got one for me and my DAR friend. We both attended the 75 th and 80th Anniversary Memorial of Pearl harbor. With the Honolulu Chapter of the DAR a wreath is placed in memory of our veterans of the Nevada at Hospital Point. Sadly it gets lost in recognition of the Arizona and other ships that day in the harbor and only by belonging to the DAR do we get access to the base to the site to honor our Sailors. I have family that have served in all conflicts since the Revolutionary War. I am very thankful to all our Veterans who provide us with our freedoms still today. Sharon Stingley

Proud too own

I first visited Pearl Harbor in 2005 and bought a flag. In the past 20 years I’ve been fortunate enough to buy many more . It’s an honor to support the Pacific Parks and an honor present an flag that has been flown over the Arizona. We are Arizona residents so it means a lot to us

Great Water Bottle

Love this water bottle. I bought a Rosie the Riveter water bottle years ago from another vendor. It recently got damaged, so I went searching for a replacement. The one I got from Pacific Historic Parks is even better than my original bottle. It has a straw to make if easy to drink from the bottle, and a carabiner to hook onto my pack or belt. Perfect!

Love it!

Perfect size, and so very special. I’ve had many compliments on it and it also starts conversation about my faith in Jesus

Battleship pencil Sharpner

I was very impressed with the detail of the pencil sharpener.
